Effective Prayer

  1. Take time to evaluate your relationship with God
    1. God listens when we pray
    2. Understand prayer is not a ritual – it involves a personal relationship with God; it is simply talking to God
    3. Realize why you should pray
      1. To glorify God
      2. We are commanded to pray
      3. God delights in our prayers
      4. Prayer brings results; it invites God to act and calls forth His power and might
    4. Be sure you are controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, who enables a believer to pray effectively
    5. The Holy Spirit is given to us to glorify Christ and to lead into all truth The Holy Spirit empowers us for effective prayer
  2. Use the "ACTS" formula as a guide.
    1. A – Adoration of who God is, expressing our complete
      trust in Him and the confidence that He hears us
    2. C – Confession of sin; being real and honest but not
      extremely introspective, accepting God's forgiveness
    3. T – Thanksgiving for the many blessings God has given
      us and thanksgiving for the difficulties and trials, knowing
      He is in control.
      1. Thank God for our country and for those who serve us in public office
      2. Thank Him for our freedom to worship
      3. Thank Him for the fact that we have choices during the election process
    4. S – Supplication - pray in specific terms
      1. We suggest you go back to the Prayer Guide and pray through the list
      2. Pray for your federal, provincial and municipal elected representatives
